Kiff Wiki

I'm a real brave boy!

Barrington "Barry" Augustus Buns III, or simply Barry Buns, is the deuteragonist of the series Kiff. He is a mellow bunny and the best friend of Kiff Chatterley, whom he often accompanies on adventures around their hometown of Table Town, where they attend Table Town Middle School.

Barrington "Barry" Augustus Buns III[6] is the third child of Mary Buns and lives with his mother, older brother Harry, older sister Terri, and younger brother Kristophe in their home in the suburbs of Table Town, across the street from his best friend Kiff Chatterley. Barry is a student at Table Town Middle School and attends Miss Deer Teacher's class with Kiff. The more mellow and sensitive half of the duo, Barry is Kiff's steadfast companion on her many adventures around Table Town.

When he was younger, Barry tended to introduce himself to others using his full name, which he would write on his palm due to his difficulty remembering it.[6] Seven years before the events of "Friendiversary", he first met Kiff, who asked him if she could call him simply "Barry", and he has gone by this shortened nickname ever since.

Barry is a bunny with light blue fur, as well as white fur on his belly and paw pads. He has long ears, large round eyes with small pupils, a pink oval-shaped nose, a buck tooth, and a small and fluffy white tail. As he himself notes, Barry does not have wrists, and instead his hands go right to his arms, which he thus calls "wrarms".[6]

In season 1, Barry is drawn with visible toes on each foot. From season 2 onward, he receives a subtle, streamlined redesign, now being drawn with blob feet in most shots.

Personality

Gentle and easygoing, Barry contrasts the audacious and energetic Kiff with his relatively composed, and at times timid, demeanor. While this means he occasionally finds himself hesitant to proceed with the adventures Kiff drags him into, his personal qualities also allow him to act as a voice of reason whenever Kiff gets in over her head.

Despite being more easily scared than Kiff, Barry manages to keep up with her on their many adventures together, and on several occasions he has surprised his peers by displaying significant bravery and confidence. In "Leave a Little Juice", Kiff incorrectly assumes that Barry is a "delicate flower" incapable of taking criticism and struggles to simply ask him not to finish her family's orange juice, but later learns that not only was she incorrect, but that Barry actually prefers direct communication. In "Hat", Barry's confident demonstration of a hat on Bring a Thing Day at school stuns his classmates and earns him the title of "Bring a Thing King". It has been implied that Barry sometimes gets into adventures of his own without Kiff; in "Big Coat", he is seen defusing a bomb with the Federal Bungalow of Investigation under unexplained circumstances.

Barry has also shown himself to be capable of standing up for himself and for others. In "Nicknames", Barry confronts Nick Namé on Kiff's behalf over Kiff being excluded from Nick's nicknaming tradition. After begrudgingly agreeing to a humiliating request for him to disguise himself as his baby brother Kristophe in "Maybe-sitting", Barry eventually gets fed up and angrily reveals the ruse. In "Personal Assistant", he tries out investigative journalism after taking a career test, leading to him deducing and publicly exposing Helen's manipulation of Kiff's career test results. In "Ye Olde Candy Shoppe of Horrors", Barry risks his life to protect Kristophe from seemingly nefarious "time goblinoids".

Over the course of the series, Barry has worked up the courage to overcome some of his major fears. After initially making a deal with the demon Scarm Scaremly to become brave enough to handle spooky things in "Trevor's Rockin' Halloween Bash", Barry manages to get over his fear naturally and help Kiff save Table Town from Scarm's rampage. Until the events of "Sun's Out Buns Out", Barry was unable to swim due to his belief in the existence of an underwater monster called "the Terrible", to the point that Kiff has to make Helen place a spell on Barry to allow him to swim in "Pool Party". He finally overcomes his fear of swimming after Kiff makes him realize that the source of his fear was a practical joke played on him when he was younger by Terri.

Like Kiff, Barry is a fan of Chubbles Wubbington (having introduced Kiff to Chubbles' movies during one of their hangouts in the school AV room),[7] as well as a member of the Table Town Public Library book club.[8] Although his athletic skills are shown to be extremely poor when he joins the school track and field team in "Kiff Is Good at Sports", Barry has also demonstrated an uncanny talent for making behind-the-back basketball shots, as seen in "Blooper Quest". Within his family, Barry is notorious as a toxically competitive board game player, specifically when playing Head of the Table, as Kiff discovers in "Thunderstorm Game Night".

As inseparable best friends, Kiff and Barry can often be found hanging out and adventuring around Table Town. Time and time again, Barry has proven himself to be an unquestionably loyal and supportive friend to Kiff, providing essential companionship and support in their many adventures together. He also greatly loves his mother Mary and, despite their occasional bickering, his siblings Harry, Terri, and Kristophe.

Barry and Kiff have the same core group of school friends. Like Kiff, Barry is also friendly with various Tabletonians whom he and Kiff regularly interact with in their adventures.

Trivia

  • Barry's recurring outfits in the series include:
    • For formal wear, a white dress shirt and a blue tie,[9] later supplemented with an earpiece.[10]
    • For swimwear, a red speedo.[11] In "Pool Party", he additionally wears an orange swim cap patterned with yellow clovers.
    • A green and yellow basketball uniform with the number "01",[12] which he has worn in a variety of contexts.
  • He is slightly older than Kiff.[13]
  • Throughout the series, he has been shown to be a notably poor liar:
    • In "Thirst to Be the First", he is tasked with impersonating Dr. Lyon on the phone with Martin Chatterley and almost immediately cracks and reveals his identity.
    • In "Two Truths and a Bunny", he receives lying advice from Terri to win a game of two truths and one lie, which fails to improve his own lying skills and instead makes him an expert on detecting other people's lies.
  • No mention is made in the series of the Buns siblings' father. However, in "Is Patty a Baddie?", a partially obscured photo of what appears to be a mustachioed rabbit can be seen on the fridge in the Buns residence.

Early character designs for Barry.

  • During pre-production of the series (as seen in the unaired series pilot), Barry was named "Bunny Guinness", and he was larger in size. Several potential character designs for Barry were created before the final version was designed.[14]

Broadcasting

  • In the Hungarian dub, Barry is voiced by Norman Holló-Zsadányi, who was born in November 2010, and thus has a higher-pitched and more childlike voice in season 1, making him sound even younger than Kiff in said dub. Starting with "The Haunting of Miss McGravy's House", Barry's voice started to noticeably deepen, presumably due to Holló-Zsadányi hitting puberty.
