"Career Day" is the second segment of the third episode of the first season of Kiff. It is the sixth segment overall.
Synopsis[]
Kiff and Barry get summer jobs at the city hall to help the citizens of Table Town in any way they can.
Plot[]
It is career day at Table Town Middle School, and the students are all determined to sign up for their preferred summer jobs before slots run out. Kiff rushes to sign up for a job at Table Town City Hall, only to discover that she is the only student interested in working there. Though Barry wants to sign up to be a garbage collector, he ends up choosing a job at City Hall to keep Kiff company.
On their first day of work at City Hall, Kiff and Barry are met by city manager Glarbin Gloobin. The two are underwhelmed by the facilities, and they also discover that Glarbin's employees have recently quit their jobs due to the dull work environment. Nonetheless, Kiff is still eager to help the people of Table Town by working at City Hall. Kiff and Barry receive a request to replace a broken traffic light bulb, but Glarbin requires them to fill out a large number of forms before they can change the bulb.
Kiff and Barry complete their paperwork, only to be told that the forms must be filled out in black ink, requiring them to start over. Frustrated, Kiff pushes the forms off her desk, unintentionally causing them to fall into a paper shredder. Glarbin sees that the forms are gone and assumes that Kiff and Barry finished filling them out, so the two go downtown and replace the bulb, which allows traffic to start moving again. Later, Ben and Quinn visit City Hall to get married. Kiff discovers that the paperwork for marriage takes eight years to process, so she shreds the necessary forms and marries the two anyway.
As the day goes on, Kiff and Barry accomplish many more tasks around Table Town by shredding any forms that Glarbin requires them to fill out. However, they learn that Glarbin intends to file away their completed forms in the City Hall archive the following day. In a panic, Barry suggests to Kiff that they should shred all the forms in the archive, but after they do so, he realizes that the plan actually does nothing to address their problem, and that he only suggested it because he has become addicted to shredding.
The next day, Kiff and Barry explain the disappearance of the archived forms to Glarbin by claiming that the building was burgled. Meanwhile, the shredder has become overloaded with shredded forms. When Glarbin uses the shredder, it explodes and fills the entire building with paper shreds, making him realize the truth. Glarbin fires Kiff and Barry, but immediately after, a crowd of Tabletonians visits City Hall to express their gratitude for Kiff and Barry's helpful deeds. Glarbin's former employees also arrive and decide to work at City Hall again, convinced that it is now a livelier place. Seeing that Kiff and Barry have spurred meaningful change, Glarbin promises to tone down his obsession with protocol. As Glarbin cannot rehire Kiff and Barry because his old staff have returned, the two take on new summer jobs as garbage collectors.

Locations[]
Trivia[]
- Opening sponsor: Dolphin Cars.
Cultural references[]
- A Game Lad console, a parody of the Game Boy, is seen in Kiff and Barry's tent.
- The "Don't let go!" motivational poster in the Table Town City Hall pantry area is a parody of the "Hang in there, Baby" poster.
- The musical cue heard while the drivers celebrate the repair of the traffic light is based on the 1968 song "Born to Be Wild" by Steppenwolf. The animatic for the episode soundtracked the scene using the Steppenwolf song itself.[2]
- Tablesoft is a parody of Microsoft.
Continuity[]
- One of Kiff and Barry's tasks is cleaning up a billboard which has been vandalized with the phrase "The Great Rubber Boom was faked!". Kiff simply changes the word "was" to "wasn't".
Errors[]
- When the camera is quickly panning across the different career day booths, Gareth is seen twice: first at the Indie Wrestling Journalist booth, then standing to the left of the Professional Mannequin booth.
Production[]
- Although preceded by "The Five Pigeons of the Acapellapocalypse" in production order, "Career Day" aired first; as a result, Mystery Lad and Nice Guy make their debut appearances in this episode (having silent cameos in the traffic jam scene), despite not being freed from imprisonment until the events of the former episode.
