"Dinner with Darryn" is the second segment of the tenth episode of the second season of Kiff. It is the eighty-fourth segment overall.
Synopsis[]
Kiff and Barry enjoy a kids-only dinner with their shy classmate, Darryn.
Plot[]
To their surprise, Kiff and Barry are invited by the usually shy Darryn to have dinner with him at Café Penguino, where he regularly dines by himself, as he has his own credit card. That night at the restaurant, Kiff and Barry are astonished to learn that unlike other children, Darryn orders from the adult menu and does not ask for activity packs. The three watch as Birthday Brian, Café Penguino's birthday singer, performs an exhausting musical number for Rory, a child celebrating his birthday there.
Not used to dining maturely, Kiff and Barry find themselves unable to have a refined conversation with Darryn over dinner. While trying to think of a conversation topic, Barry notices a teenager named Tracey leaving her family's table to use the bathroom, then leaving the bathroom in disguise and joining another table with Ben Bamboo and Vanilla Tigner. Since Darryn finds gossip impolite, when he is not looking, Kiff and Barry secretly meet under their table and orchestrate a plan to investigate Tracey. When Darryn spots them slipping back into their seats, Barry explains that they were under the table because "it's a common meeting place for kids in restaurants."
After distracting Darryn, Kiff and Barry move around Café Penguino to carry out their investigation. They overhear Tracey's parents mention that it is Tracey's birthday, then eavesdrop on Tracey herself and learn that her plan is to get her birthday celebrated twice, allowing her to enjoy an extra Pingy the Clown birthday sundae. The duo also realize that Tracey's scheme might drive Birthday Brian to quit his job due to exhaustion, as he has already performed for seven birthday celebrations in the same night.
Kiff and Barry return to their table and convince a reluctant Darryn to call Bríonne, the manager, so that they can report Tracey. However, when Bríonne arrives, Kiff and Barry are unable to converse maturely and instead babble over each other, leaving Bríonne unable to understand what they are trying to say. Just as a fatigued Birthday Brian is about to fall for Tracey's plan, Darryn calls Bríonne back and is able to properly inform her about Tracey's "birthday embezzlement". With her scheme exposed, Tracey is banned from Café Penguino until her next birthday, and her parents take her home.
Afterwards, Darryn tells Kiff and Barry that he regrets not having gotten more involved in their investigation, admitting that due to his maturity, he has a hard time socializing with other kids. Feeling sorry for him, Kiff and Barry give Darryn a hug. Birthday Brian then presents Darryn with a birthday sundae to thank him for stopping Tracey. Under the table, Darryn shares the sundae with Kiff and Barry and reveals to them that it really is his birthday.

The biggest challenge was figuring out different background angles for the restaurant. Some of these have been touched up by the amazing board revisionists. #storyboardartist #kiff #disney.
