"Friendiversary" is the first segment of the ninth episode of the first season of Kiff. It is the seventeenth segment overall.
Synopsis[]
Kiff and Barry are "identicals tentacles" in everything, however an extra gift may tip the scales.
Plot[]
In the school playground, Kiff and Barry are celebrating their "friendiversary" by sitting on the same seesaw where they first met seven years earlier. So that neither needs to stand up, Trevor gives Kiff and Barry their friendiversary gifts from each other, which turn out to be matching berets. Kiff proudly calls the matching gifts proof of the equal balance of their friendship, but she then receives an extra gift from Barry, a miniature glass pumpkin. This makes Kiff feel guilty about not having an extra gift of her own, so she leaves to buy one. Trevor stays behind with Barry and tries to get closer to him while Kiff is away.
Kiff buys a matching glass pumpkin for Barry, but upon returning to the playground she becomes self-conscious about the gift and decides to get him another gift instead. She visits Dan Hill at his pumpkin patch to ask what would make a better gift than a pumpkin, and ends up buying his most cherished gift, his tractor. When Kiff returns again, however, she realizes that Barry has no use for a tractor since he does not have a farm. Kiff then makes many other expensive purchases around Table Town and comes back with a bag full of gifts, but when she sees Barry and Trevor laughing together on the seesaw, she is left feeling that she has failed Barry as a friend and leaves before she can present the gifts.
In her shame, Kiff stows away on the caboose of a moving train. She explains her predicament to another stowaway, who turns out to be a train robber. The robber steals Kiff's bag of gifts, but also advises her that even a simple hug can make a good gift. Inspired by this advice, Kiff rushes back to the playground, only to find Barry being embraced by Trevor. Thinking that Barry has sought out a new best friend, she apologizes for neglecting Barry on their friendiversary and explains that she was trying to find him an extra gift. Barry does not mind, as he had assumed that Kiff was in the restroom the whole time, and gladly accepts Kiff's gift of a hug.
Trevor suddenly handcuffs himself to Barry and proclaims himself to be Barry's new best friend. Barry, however, simply slips his arm out, with Kiff explaining to a confused Trevor that handcuffs are ineffective on Barry because he has "wrarms" (arms lacking wrists). Kiff apologizes to Barry for spending the day obsessing over getting an extra gift to match his gift, but Barry tells her that regardless of any gift, they are still "identicals tentacles". The two leave to enjoy the rest of their friendiversary, inviting Trevor to tag along. As they all walk together, Trevor stares evilly into the camera and mutters that "phase one" of his plan is complete.

Cultural references[]
- The episode is titled after, and focuses on, the concept of a "friendiversary".
- Coincidentally, two months after the episode aired, a SpongeBob SquarePants episode of the same name was released.
- When Kiff and Barry open their friendiversary gifts, a recreation of the chest-opening sound effect from the video game series The Legend of Zelda is heard.
- While opening the case holding the glass pumpkins, the Table Town Gift Emporium's owner hums the opening fanfare from Also sprach Zarathustra by Richard Strauss, best known for its use in the 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey.
- John Maan, the manufacturer of the tractor bought by Kiff, is a parody of John Deere.
- Miss Tulane's painting of Barry as a knight parodies the cover art for the 2016 video game Dark Souls III.
Continuity[]
- Kiff buys a Star Star Throne Quest comic book from Reggie as a gift for Barry, marking the first appearance of the Star Star Throne Quest franchise.
- One of the gifts Kiff buys for Barry is a "yikeseeola" shirt. She is later seen wearing the same shirt in subsequent episodes.
Production[]
- Storyboard artist Brett Muller considers this his favorite episode to have worked on.[2]
- In the episode's storyboard phase, the scene in which Kiff gets Barry a tractor featured additional dialogue, as well as a cut gag in which Dan Hill accidentally bumps the tractor into a slide as he drives away from the playground.[3]
