"Kiff's on a Plane" is the second segment of the sixth episode of the first season of Kiff. It is the twelfth segment overall.
Synopsis[]
Kiff joins pilot school to appear grown up to Beryl and her friends.
Plot[]
Kiff is at the Table Town Airport with Beryl, who is there to meet her visiting friends from college: Meryl, Deryl, and Cheryl. Eager to fit in, Kiff laughs along with them when Cheryl jokes that the baggage carousel "makes the auto club look like Frankenstein's china cabinet", despite not getting the joke. Beryl nonetheless comments that Kiff will get the joke when she is older. Feeling slighted, Kiff sees an advertisement for a flight training course and decides to enroll in the course to prove her maturity to the "Eryls".
On the first day of the course, the instructor, Sgt. Bigby Hind, asks the students their motivations for taking the course. Biff shares his motivation, which is coincidentally the same as Kiff's, and is promptly expelled for having "emotional baggage". Kiff thus lies that her motivation is the same as Hind's, namely a love of clouds. For Hind's first lesson, on conquering one's fear of heights, Kiff has to walk up an aircraft staircase. Before she can, Barry suddenly arrives and brings Kiff her sippy cup at Beryl's request, embarrassing Kiff. She continues her test but suddenly imagines the Eryls taunting her for not getting the joke earlier, causing her to faint on the staircase, though Barry catches her. Hind is impressed by Barry's reflexes and enrolls him in the course.
For Hind's next lesson, Kiff has to sit on a pilot chair and deliver a simple radio address, but she imagines the microphone turning into Cheryl and taunting Kiff for not getting the joke. Kiff shouts that she did get the joke, to Hind's confusion. Barry suggests that Kiff needs an "epic training sequence", leading to a montage showing Kiff gradually becoming more confident and eventually acing her tests. Kiff invites the Eryls to observe the final day of the course, during which each student will take a flight simulation exam to earn a junior pilot's license.
The next day, Kiff is disappointed to learn that the simulation will take place on a plane kiddie ride rather than an actual plane, since the course is meant for junior pilots. Nonetheless, she carries on with the simulation as confidently as she can. Things go well until she is hit by a volleyball (as the course includes a lesson inspired by the volleyball scene from the pilot-themed movie Fly Guys), knocking her out of the plane ride. Kiff's pilot hat and sunglasses land on her butt, causing the audience to laugh, while Hind says that he will be failing Kiff.
A defiant Kiff gets up and addresses Hind and the audience. After admitting her true reason for enrolling in the course, Kiff declares that she is tired of pretending, and that she did not, in fact, get the joke. Beryl stands up and admits that she did not get the joke either, followed by Meryl and Deryl, and even Cheryl, who admits that she was only "riffing" and that the joke made no sense. Moved by Kiff's speech, Hind reveals that he actually hates clouds and decides to pass Kiff. Accompanied by the Eryls, Kiff walks off into the sunset.
