Kiff Chatterley, "Thirst to Be the First"

Kiff Chatterley is the titular main protagonist of the series Kiff. She is an optimistic squirrel whose ambition takes her on frequent adventures with her best friend Barry Buns around their hometown of Table Town, where they attend Table Town Middle School.

Profile

Nicknames 053

Kiff in her bedroom, mid-song.

Kiff Chatterley is the only child of Beryl Chatterley and Martin Chatterley, and the three live in their home in the suburbs of Table Town. She is a student at Table Town Middle School and attends Miss Deer Teacher's class with her neighbor and best friend Barry Buns, along with several other friends of theirs. Outgoing and optimistic, Kiff is defined by her zest for life, which takes her on countless adventures with Barry around Table Town.

The episode "Nicknames" reveals that "Kiff" is actually a nickname given to Kiff as an infant by her parents, who derived the nickname from the sound of her "little toots". Kiff's actual first name has yet to be revealed, though Kiff apparently dislikes it and much prefers her nickname.[4]

Appearance

Lost and Found 242

Kiff pointing to the chunk missing from her ear.

Kiff is a squirrel with orange fur, a pale yellow underbelly, and a bushy tail lined with a reddish brown stripe. She has a round head, large round eyes with small pupils and two eyelashes on each eye, a dark brown oval-shaped nose, and a buck tooth.

Notably, a small chunk is missing from Kiff's right ear, the cause of which has yet to be specifically explained. While Kiff's friends are looking through pictures in Miss McGravy's backyard treehouse of their past exploits in the yard in "The Haunting of Miss McGravy's House", they indicate that "the incident with Kiff's ear" took place there; however, the picture is not shown, and Kiff leaves before she (or anyone else) can elaborate on the nature of the incident. Kiff herself has only acknowledged her missing ear chunk once, in "Lost and Found". In "Be Still My Harp", her ear appears intact in a flashback to two years earlier.

Personality

EIRR 008

Kiff and Barry heading on an adventure.

Kiff is cheerful and optimistic by nature, with an adventure-seeking spirit and a strong sense of determination that typically manifests in her exploits. Though Kiff's audaciousness can sometimes lead her into unnecessarily complicated situations, her intentions are always well-meaning, and she often tries to spread positivity and help others around Table Town while adventuring. Kiff is also very nice and friendly, having a great deal of love for her family and friends, and has a strong sense of integrity, willing to stick up for anyone at all costs.

Nonetheless, Kiff can also be highly cunning if the situation calls for it. While generally respectful of authority figures and rules, Kiff is not above defying them should they get in the way of her personal principles or goals, or even just her curiosity. In particularly hectic situations, she has been known to resort to what she calls "squirrel attacks", which typically involve her aggressively leaping onto others.

Kiff has perfectionist tendencies, with Martin calling her "a textbook perfectionist" like her mother,[9] and Beryl herself telling Kiff that "giving 50 percent isn't exactly your strong suit".[10] Kiff's inability to properly "half-heinie" something is, for instance, a major plot point in "Halfway There Day", where she is tasked with preparing a meal with only 50% effort and ends up stressing herself out trying to make a perfectly average-looking meal; and in "OTDR", where she becomes increasingly aggravated by Barry, Beryl, and Martin's failure to be punctual for a fancy event. While trying to purposely make bloopers in "Blooper Quest", she ends up creating a perfect film, which ironically upsets her. Kiff has also expressed lofty ambitions such as wanting to go down in Table Town history (which she tries to achieve in "Thirst to Be the First" by being the first person to take a sip from Table Town Middle School's new water fountain) and wanting an exciting future job such as astronaut, president, war hero, or "astronaut president".[11]

LOTI 200

Kiff in deep thinking.

An avid learner, Kiff often enthusiastically participates in her classes and other school activities. She is regarded as a star student by her teachers and enjoys doing homework, to the point of feeling empty when she is not assigned any.[12] Out of her love for learning, she even disagrees with the concept of detention, which she believes to be a waste of time better spent learning, prompting her to break out of it in "Life on the Inside". Kiff has occasionally found herself trying to promote the values of education to wayward students, such as Harry Buns in "Brunch DJ" and the detention regulars in "Life on the Inside". In "Taily", Kiff becomes class president, despite technically losing the election to her own tail (which she calls "Taily") after being forced to perform a ventriloquist act with it in order to attract voters. Additionally, Kiff frequents the Table Town Public Library and is a member of the library's book club.[13]

CareerDay 179

Kiff also has a strong sense of civic pride. In "Career Day", she is the only student interested in taking a summer job at Table Town City Hall, and once hired, she and Barry resort to shredding all of their tedious paperwork in order to get jobs done around the city faster. In "Totally Table Town", Kiff produces an elaborate music video about Table Town solely to prove the city's greatness to a skeptical anonymous TableToob commenter (who turns out to be her own father).

TSOH 349

Kiff has been shown to have a proclivity for the arts, and particularly loves musicals.[14] She has indicated that she apparently comes up with the lyrics for the various songs she sings throughout the series on the spot.[15] In "The Sound of Helen", Kiff leads her class in their production of their original musical My Fair Helen, while in "Blooper Quest", Kiff demonstrates her talent for filmmaking by co-writing and directing the film Found in Ambiguity, which goes on to be a major success.

Among other hobbies, Kiff is an avid collector of assorted comics and toys and maintains a dedicated "collectorium" in her bedroom.[16] She is also a huge fan of action movie star Chubbles Wubbington, having been introduced to his movies by watching them in the school AV room with Barry.[17] In "Kiff Is Good at Sports", Kiff discovers that she is a naturally talented discus thrower and leads her school to their first ever track meet victories, though she ultimately leaves the track and field team to focus on her academics instead. Kiff is an active TableToob user[18] but is otherwise almost completely indifferent to social media, which leads to her being chosen to guard and destroy a dangerous, magical smartphone ring light in "Lore of the Ring Light".

Road Trip 213

Kiff has friendly relationships with people all over Table Town – chief among them Barry Buns, her inseparable best friend and adventuring partner. Kiff is also especially close to her parents Beryl and Martin, who in turn love Kiff and her adventurous spirit, and who mostly tolerate, and sometimes even participate in, the hijinks their daughter often gets into.

In addition to Barry, Kiff's core group of school friends includes Trevor Angstrom, Renée du Bedat, Candle Fox, and Reggie Racona, who support the duo in their adventures from time to time. Kiff's close and frequent acquaintances also include Barry's mother Mary and siblings Harry, Terri, and Kristophe, along with adults such as Miss Deer Teacher, Principal Secretary, and even Kiff's egocentric drama teacher Helen, who despite being a regular foil to Kiff and Barry in their adventures has also often joined forces with them.

Trivia

  • Kiff's recurring outfits in the series include:
    • For formal wear, a gray suit jacket, a blue blouse, black high heels, and pearl earrings.[19]
    • For sleepwear, a blue T-shirt with the word "Yikeseeola" written on it in white print, and green monster slippers.[20]
    • For swimwear, a one-piece swimsuit with a red top dotted with black seeds, mimicking a watermelon's interior, and below the waist, a green print lined with vertical black stripes, mimicking a watermelon's exterior.[21]
  • A diagram shown in "Kiff Is Good at Sports" indicates that she is an eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis).
  • She is slightly younger than Barry,[3] and four days older than Reggie.[22]
  • She seemingly loves watermelons and owns several watermelon-themed items, including a watermelon swimsuit,[21] watermelon pajamas,[15] and a watermelon flag for her bike.[23]

  • She goes by the username "Kifftastic4" on TableToob.[18]
  • As a squirrel, she has a "two-ton cheek capacity", enabling her to stuff large amounts of food in her mouth, which she demonstrates in "Friendship in the Time of Cheese Caves".
  • When she was a toddler, she cut all of Martin's jeans into jorts, resulting in the creation of the Chatterleys' "family court" system for resolving disagreements.[24]
  • Her favorite book is A String of Shocking Occurances.[25]
  • According to her, her first words were "I love you, Lil' Ouchie".[26]
  • Of the students in Miss Deer Teacher's class, Kiff and Snekole are the only ones whose mother and father have both been seen.

Production

Kiff early development 1

Concept art of Kiff, prior to the show's production.

  • According to Kiff creators Lucy Heavens and Nic Smal, Kiff was named after a slang word for "cool" in their native South Africa.[27]
  • During pre-production of the series (as seen in the unaired series pilot), Kiff was named "Donk" and had a smaller appearance, in addition to lacking her distinctive missing ear chunk.[28][29]
  • A 2021 pre-release promotional poster for the series shows Kiff in a slightly different earlier design, with two chunks missing from her ear instead of one.[30]
