"Kiff and Barry Go to Prom" is the second segment of the twenty-sixth episode of the first season of Kiff. It is the fifty-second segment overall.

Synopsis[]

Kiff, Barry, and Trevor crash the high school prom to feed their gossip hunger.

Plot[]

In the Table Town Middle School playground, Principal Secretary is collecting donations to help fund Table Town High School's upcoming "jungle clam"-themed prom. Trevor, Table Town Middle School's authority on high school gossip, rushes to the playground and reports to Kiff and Barry that Terri has asked Kyle Lyon to prom, as Kyle's girlfriend Michaela Oats apparently broke up with him via text while on a trip with her schoolmate Danny Wibbon to Danny's beach house. Complicating things further, Danny was afterwards spotted walking Vanilla Tigner to the bus stop. Trevor then receives a call and learns that Michaela has asked Ben Bamboo to prom instead of Danny. Wanting to learn more about the situation, Kiff, Barry, and Trevor decide to crash the prom.

On the night of the prom, the three sneak into the school gym and hide in the rafters to observe the prom. They spot Ben and Michaela having fun with Danny and Vanilla, which clarifies that the two have nothing to do with Michaela's drama with Kyle. However, the loud music makes it impossible to hear the high schoolers' conversations from above, so Trevor decides to find a different vantage point below. He convinces security to let him through the main entrance by wearing a fake mustache and claiming to be the prom band's backup drummer. However, the band's drummer is out sick, so Trevor finds himself having to play with the band.

Kyle arrives with Terri, who is only at the prom because she thinks that being crowned prom queen will help increase her social media following. From the rafters, Kiff and Barry are able to observe Kyle and Michaela trying to make each other jealous. During the balloon drop, however, Kiff and Barry are knocked off the rafters by the falling balloons and end up tumbling to the floor below. To prevent themselves from being noticed, they hide in one of the prom's clam decorations.

Just as he is about to perform, Trevor eats a chocolate-dipped marshmallow from the fondue table, which energizes him into drumming spectacularly. Meanwhile, after overhearing a conversation between Michaela and her best friend, Kiff and Barry realize that Kyle failed to receive an additional text from Michaela, which would have clarified that she texted him to refrain from calling her because reception at the beach house would be bad, and not because she was breaking up with him. Before they can tell Kyle, they are caught by Principal Secretary and thrown out of the gym.

Outside, Kiff and Barry see Kyle crying behind a dumpster and inform him that Michaela never intended to break up with him. To get them back together, Kiff and Barry accompany Kyle back inside the gym. Trevor, who has been crowned prom king, stops Principal Secretary from kicking Kiff and Barry out again. With Trevor on drums, Kiff and Barry perform a song explaining the entire misunderstanding to Michaela, which succeeds in reconciling her and Kyle.

Cultural references[]

  • At the prom, Kyle and Michaela mimic the lift scene from the climax of the 1987 film Dirty Dancing.
  • While performing "We're at the Prom", Kiff addresses any "time travelers trying to set up their parents" in the audience, a reference to Marty McFly doing so in the 1985 film Back to the Future. After she mentions this, a time traveler appears in the audience wearing an orange vest similar to Marty McFly's.
