"Mall Leader" is the first segment of the fifteenth episode of the first season of Kiff. It is the twenty-ninth segment overall.
Synopsis[]
Kiff leads a group to the mall to get a free pretzel, but leadership comes with responsibilities.
Plot[]
Barry receives an alert on his phone that the Table Town Mall is offering a free Hot Knots pretzel to anyone who brings ten people there, so Kiff invites their classmates to the mall. When they decline, Kiff uses tips from a self-help book Barry has procured called How to Possess Followers & Win People to convince them to come along. The group goes to the mall and Kiff claims the pretzel, but it soon becomes apparent to Kiff and Barry that she has unintentionally brainwashed their classmates, who obey her every command and follow her wherever she goes.
Kiff and Barry want to eat the pretzel in peace, but their classmates refuse to leave Kiff's side. While hiding from them, Kiff and Barry come across Helen, who is manning a kiosk for her part-time bedazzling business. When Kiff's classmates return, Kiff tells them that she is delegating her leadership to Helen and commands them to follow Helen, then gives Helen the self-help book. Kiff and Barry go upstairs to eat the pretzel, but when they look down they see their classmates bedazzling items for Helen. Kiff feels guilty and imagines a true crime documentary being made about her in which she is portrayed as a sinister cult leader.
As Kiff needs the book to take back her leadership from Helen, she and Barry try to read it using binoculars. Kiff learns that it has a chapter she has not yet read which concerns the fourth and most powerful leadership quality, but the text is blocked by one of Helen's bedazzled belts. Barry rappels Kiff down so she can retrieve the book undetected, but before he can pull her back up, a child comes up to him and makes him lose his grip. Kiff and Barry run away with the book, only for their classmates to snatch it back at Helen's command. Barry then remembers that they are at the mall and simply buys another copy.
Kiff reads that the most powerful leadership quality is selflessness, then demonstrates this by giving Helen the pretzel, causing Kiff's classmates to reacknowledge Kiff as their leader. She commands them to think for themselves and not be commanded by anyone, snapping them out of their brainwashed states. Meanwhile, Helen flees with her kiosk after a security guard tells her she is operating without a permit.
