"Mushroommates" is the second segment of the twenty-seventh episode of the first season of Kiff. It is the fifty-fourth segment overall.

Synopsis[]

Unwelcome intruders overtake the Chatterleys' backyard.

Plot[]

While wrapping up their regular Saturday morning chore of weeding the backyard, Kiff and Martin realize that they have forgotten to weed the grass behind the shed. They decide to put off the task until the next Saturday. Six Saturdays later, Beryl invites her Table Town University colleagues over for a barbecue in the backyard. She wants to set the grill up behind the shed, but Kiff and Martin have still not weeded the grass there. The two rush to do so before Beryl finds out, only to discover that an invasive colony of highly intelligent biting mushrooms has occupied the area. Their leader, a young mushroom named Roo, refuses Kiff's request for them to leave.

In the shed, Kiff and Martin devise a plan to get rid of the mushrooms using the lawn mower, but they are overheard by the mushrooms, who destroy the mower and decide to take over the entire backyard in retaliation. Kiff and Martin battle the mushrooms for control of the backyard, but are overpowered and forced to retreat inside the house. Kiff calls Reggie for advice and learns that biting mushrooms hate smooth jazz music. Though Kiff and Martin manage to weaken the mushrooms by blasting smooth jazz music from a boombox, the mushrooms then use their fungus cannons to destroy the boombox.

Oblivious to the situation, Beryl leads her fellow professors, including her boss Dean Kim, to the backyard, only to find it overrun with mushrooms. Kiff and Martin are forced to admit that they procrastinated weeding the grass behind the shed. However, Beryl's co-workers turn out to be interested in studying the mushrooms. Kiff tells Roo that the mushrooms can stay, but Roo and the other mushrooms instead leave the backyard, as it is against their nature as an invasive species to live where they are wanted.

Before leaving, Dean Kim commends Beryl for setting up a great team building experience for the professors and asks her to write an informative essay about the day's events. Satisfied that everything worked out, Kiff and Martin prepare to unwind and watch TV, but Beryl stops them and says that she suspects neither of them learned anything from their experience. Kiff says that they learned that procrastination can sometimes be good, and an annoyed Beryl tasks them with writing her essay for her. Kiff and Martin decide to write the essay the following Saturday instead.
