"Sun's Out Buns Out" is the second segment of the thirtieth and final episode of the first season of Kiff. It is the sixtieth segment overall and serves as the season one finale.
Synopsis[]
Barry learns to swim.
Plot[]
With Table Town Middle School officially out for the summer, Kiff, Barry, Trevor, Renée, Candle, and Reggie make plans to hang out. Barry suggests going to the pool, then shocks his friends by revealing that he actually has a pool at home. Upon arriving there, however, they find that the pool is being used by Terri and her friends, who hog the pool to themselves. When Terri points out that Barry cannot even swim, Kiff and Barry make a bet with Terri that the middle schoolers can use the pool if Barry manages to swim the entire length of the pool by the end of the week, and that whoever loses the bet has to serve watermelon by the pool for the entire summer.
Seeing Ben and Quinn driving to the Table Town Mall in their water-filled dolphin car, the middle schoolers head to the mall as well. There, Barry's friends stack on top of each other and disguise themselves as a valet, then take the car so that Barry can practice in it. After receiving swimming lessons on land from the others, Barry gets in the car and begins to swim. He manages well until his foot hits a miniature castle ornament in the water, which triggers a flashback of him being pinched in the foot by a monster at the bottom of his pool while swimming there when he was younger. Barry jumps out of the car screaming, then explains that he cannot swim because of his traumatic encounter with what Terri claimed was a monster called "the Terrible", who would return for Barry if he ever tried to get back in his pool.
Barry's friends all recognize that the "monster" was merely a lie told by Terri to a gullible Barry, though Kiff tells Barry that he does not have to force himself to swim if he feels uncomfortable. Determined to prove himself to his friends and prevent Terri from winning the bet, Barry decides to face his fears. He returns to his pool with the others, then gets in the water and swims without fear. Realizing that she is about to lose the bet, Terri discreetly goes underwater and pinches Barry's foot before he can make it to the end of the pool, causing him to abruptly stop and scream in terror.
After getting Barry out of the pool, Kiff catches Terri reemerging from underwater and realizes that she sabotaged Barry's swim. Kiff makes Barry realize that "the Terrible" was actually Terri by pointing out that she even named the monster after herself. With this knowledge, Barry gets back in the water and swims to the end of the pool, fully conquering his fears. Terri congratulates Barry and accepts that she lost the bet. Over a musical montage, Kiff and the others have fun in the pool and celebrate the beginning of summer, eventually being joined by many other Tabletonians, who have also just learned about the Buns' pool.

Locations[]
Songs[]
- "Right Here with You" – written by Nic Smal and Lucy Heavens
Trivia[]
- Opening sponsor: Tanks 4 Nothin' Fish Tanks.
Cultural references[]
- The episode's title references the expression "sun's out, buns out".
- "Hot Bird Summer" is a play on the slang expression "hot girl summer".
Continuity[]
- Kiff and Barry wear their swimming clothes for a second consecutive episode, following "Beach Day".
- Reggie, Helen, and Billiam wear the same swimming clothes that they previously wore in "Pool Party".
- Terri calls the middle schoolers "gumdrops".
- Barry overcomes his inability to swim, which was first established in "Pool Party".
- The "Right Here with You" song sequence calls back to many episodes from the first season, which is revealed to have taken place over the course of one school year:
- Kiff and Barry are shown wearing their outfits from "Friendiversary", "Big Barry on Campus", "The Five Pigeons of the Acapellapocalypse", "Two for One Hot Dogs", "Career Day", "Harry's Maturity Crisis", "Kiff's on a Plane", "Trevor's Rockin' Halloween Bash", "Friendship in the Time of Cheese Caves", and "I Like to Move It!"; Kiff and Barry's younger selves, previously seen in "Be Still My Harp" and "Friendiversary", are also shown.
- The line "From a first sip through to a swimming Bun" refers to the events of the first ("Thirst to Be the First") and last ("Sun's Out Buns Out") episodes of the season.
- Kiff is shown streaming the series itself on TV, with the series logo and screenshots of the opening sequence and the episodes "Principal Helen", "Kiff Is Good at Sports", "Fun Uncle Pat", and "Sun's Out Buns Out" itself (along with the titles of the latter three episodes) being seen.
- Kiff and her friends are seen reading some of the magazines from "Maybe-sitting".
- The "Stay in School" shirt from "Brunch DJ" is seen burning on a barbecue grill.
- Other Barry, who died off-screen and was memorialized at the end of "Two for One Hot Dogs", reappears as a ghost.
- Miss Moufflé is seen reading the book B.O. Wulf from "Kiff Is Good at Sports".
- The seagull girl from "Beach Day" is seen flying with a string still hanging from her mouth, dragging a giant mess of objects from Bannister Beach on a mountain below.
- The disembodied head of Candle's ice sculpture from "Pool Party" is seen on a mountain.
Errors[]
- When the camera cuts back to Barry and Kiff after Terri stops their friends from jumping in the pool, Kiff is seen without eyebrows.
- When Barry and his friends return from the Table Town Mall to the pool, Michaela is seen wearing a second pearl bracelet with a cyan color, which is then seen colored white when Michaela sits down to watch Barry swim, then disappears entirely in subsequent scenes.
- At one point, one of Renée's front teeth appears transparent, with a thin black line going through it.
- In the "Right Here with You" song sequence:
- The black seed dots are missing from Kiff's watermelon swimsuit in certain shots.
- When Kiff and her friends are seen playing Marco Polo, one of the shoulder straps on Candle's swimsuit loses its purple color, leaving only a black outline. Kiff and Candle are also missing their eyelashes.
- When Beryl eats her burger, her swimsuit is seen with a white line not present in earlier shots.
