"Thirst to Be the First" is the first segment of the first episode of the first season of Kiff. It is the first segment overall and serves as the series premiere.
Synopsis
Kiff wants the first sip at a new water fountain, and nothing will stop her.
Plot
Table Town Middle School is having a ceremony to unveil a new water fountain, and Kiff Chatterley has been selected to take the ceremonial first sip. Kiff excitedly looks forward to making her mark in Table Town history as the first person to take a sip from the fountain. Kiff's best friend Barry Buns invites her to take one last sip from the old water fountain, but Kiff has decided not to sip anything until the ceremony the following day.
The next morning, Kiff finds that her tail has gone limp. Kiff's mother Beryl suspects that Kiff is sick with drooptail and forces Kiff to stay home from school, despite Kiff's protests. As Beryl needs to go to work, Kiff's father Martin is tasked with looking after Kiff. Anticipating that Kiff will attempt to sneak out of the house, Beryl arranges the alphabet magnets on the fridge to spell out the message "Kiff is tricking you" as a reminder for Martin.
To convince Martin that she is not sick, Kiff grooms herself and wears a belt to hold her tail up, but Martin sees the message on the fridge and sends Kiff back to bed. Kiff calls Barry and asks him to call Martin while pretending to be Kiff's doctor and tell Martin that she is healthy. However, Barry cracks under pressure and admits his real identity to Martin, foiling the plan.
At school, the ceremony is about to start. Kiff makes multiple attempts to leave the house, all of which are foiled when Martin sees the message on the fridge. With Kiff still absent, Barry creates a decoy of Kiff's head. Kiff realizes that the message is thwarting her escape attempts and tries to remove it from the fridge, but she is spotted by Martin. Kiff makes one last attempt to leave by claiming that she was cast in a play about a character with drooptail and has been method acting the entire time. She improvises a scene from the non-existent play in the kitchen, during which she discreetly alters the message on the fridge to instead read "Kiff is king yo". Martin is fooled and lets Kiff leave the house.
Kiff heads to the ceremony and seemingly makes it in time for the first sip, but she then wakes up and finds herself lying on her front lawn, as she actually passed out from exhaustion shortly after leaving the house. Her tail improves slightly after being hit by water from a sprinkler, causing Kiff to realize that she is not sick, but simply dehydrated. After Kiff drinks a glass of water, her tail returns to normal. She then rushes to school, only to find that the ceremony has long finished. Kiff is disappointed until Barry presents her with a framed picture from the ceremony, which she is touched by. As the two leave, the camera pans on the picture, revealing that "Kiff" took the first sip after all, as Barry covered for her at the ceremony using the decoy he made.
