"Weekly Grocery Shop" is the second segment of the thirteenth episode of the first season of Kiff. It is the twenty-sixth segment overall.
Synopsis[]
The Chatterleys encounter obstacles during their weekly grocery shopping trip.
Plot[]
The Chatterleys are at Slim Pickins for their weekly grocery shopping trip. The store is holding a promotion offering shoppers a chance to play the store's antique crane game if they collect twenty coupons, so Beryl assigns Martin to do the grocery shopping while she collects coupons around the store. Kiff is looking forward to getting some free samples from the sample station.
While collecting coupons, Beryl bumps into Helen and introduces herself as Kiff's mother, but Helen fails to remember who Kiff is and their conversation ends awkwardly. Kiff finds the sample station being run by a grouchy new employee, Gordon, who refuses to give children free samples. Martin has once again forgotten the shopping list but does not want to tell Beryl, so he tries shopping without it. He first shops for bread, but realizes that he cannot remember the exact bread the Chatterleys normally buy.
Kiff runs into Barry, Reggie, and Candle, all of whom have also been turned away from the sample station, so the four decide to work together to outsmart Gordon and get free samples. Beryl and Helen have another awkward encounter during which Beryl unintentionally ends up repeatedly bumping her shopping cart into Helen's cart. Martin tells another shopper about his situation after she notices him staring at her shopping list, so she lets him follow her list and shop with her.
The children try asking an adult, Secretary Prince, to get free samples for them. He manages to get the samples, but after trying one for himself and enjoying it, he winds up eating all of them. Beryl locates the final coupon, but Helen is in the same aisle and threatens to turn Beryl into a mushroom if Beryl engages Helen in small talk again. As Helen walks away, Beryl discovers that the coupon has fallen into Helen's shopping cart.
After more failed attempts by the children to get free samples, Candle offers to ask Roy to buy the actual products for them to eat, but Kiff says that their quest is specifically about their right to free samples. They then fool Gordon into thinking that a statue of Slimmy P, the Slim Pickins mascot, is actually an employee taking over his shift. After Martin finishes shopping, he learns that the list he followed was tailored for a diet and realizes that his cart is full of low-calorie food and drink products. Seeing a nearby employee holding samples, Martin explains that he forgot his list and asks for shopping advice. However, the "employee" is the statue, which the children, camouflaged on the floor, are wheeling away from the sample station. Their cover is blown and Gordon takes back the samples.
Martin asks Kiff not to tell Beryl that he forgot the list, but Beryl has already overheard him, as she is sitting on a shelf behind them and using a fishing rod to retrieve the coupon from Helen's cart. Beryl fishes out the coupon, but is seen by Helen, who makes good on her threat and starts chasing Beryl around the store. As Beryl had earlier mentioned her dislike of mushrooms, Helen launches a spell at Beryl to turn her into something she hates, but the spell hits Gordon instead, turning him into a child. This causes Gordon to let go of his hatred of children and finally give Kiff and her friends free samples. Helen sees Beryl and Kiff standing next to each other and belatedly realizes who Beryl is.
At the end of the day, Kiff leaves with a tray full of free samples, Beryl wins an antique kazoo from the crane game, and Martin buys the low-calorie groceries anyway. Meanwhile, the Slimmy P statue comes to life and proceeds to travel around Table Town before flying off into the sky.
