"When You Mow, You Mow" is the first segment of the twenty-third episode of the first season of Kiff. It is the forty-fifth segment overall.

Synopsis[]

Reggie is the first kid in Table Town to mow his own lawn, and Kiff wants to be the second.

Plot[]

Reggie is mowing his front lawn, a sight which impresses his friends, including Kiff, who then has a daydream about operating a mower of her own. At home, Kiff gives Beryl and Martin a presentation to convince them to let her mow the lawn. They agree to let Kiff do so under Martin's supervision, but Kiff is too short to reach the handle of the family's mower. Kiff visits Reggie and asks if she can borrow his mower, which has a shorter handle, but Reggie refuses after Kiff accidentally stains the mower with chocolate.

Back home, Kiff tries to reach the mower's handle by wearing a pair of Beryl's high heels, but she is unable to walk steadily in them and is eventually forced by Beryl to take them off. Kiff then tries tying a helium balloon around her waist, but the balloon carries her away and she gets stuck in a tree. Martin ends up mowing the lawn and earning the adulation of the Chatterleys' neighbors, further annoying Kiff.

In the garage, Kiff sees a copy of Big Robot!! and gets the idea to build a tall robot that she can strap herself to in order to mow the lawn. Kiff builds the robot, but instead of helping her mow the lawn, it questions whether it is alive. The robot scans the Internet to learn more about being alive, leading to it becoming self-aware and deciding to destroy the world. It transforms into a much larger robot and destroys the Chatterleys' home, then proceeds to destroy all of Table Town. The Chatterleys hide in an underground bunker, where a traumatized Kiff says that she only wanted to mow the lawn.

The scene cuts back to the garage, revealing that the preceding scenario was only imagined by Kiff, who has not yet built the robot. She still finds the idea worth pursuing and only abandons it because she does not have any soldering goggles. Frustrated, Kiff throws a ball of crumpled paper at the wall, setting off a chain reaction of objects falling which ultimately leads to Kiff discovering that the mower has a retractable handle. She gets ready to finally mow the lawn, only to see that it is now snowing. Martin invites her to help him shovel snow from the lawn, but Kiff declines, as she is only interested in mowing. While Kiff enjoys a cup of hot cocoa in the living room, Martin shovels snow outside. A sheet of snow falls from the roof, trapping Martin underneath.

Trivia[]

Cultural references[]

  • The episode's title is a play on the expression "when you know, you know".
  • The musical cue (previously used in "Career Day") heard when Reggie is first seen mowing his lawn is based on the 1968 song "Born to Be Wild" by Steppenwolf.
  • Kiff and Martin both eat Peanut B&B's, a parody of Peanut M&M's. The B&B's slogan "Melts in your paw/hoof/fin!" is a reversal of the M&M's slogan "Melts in your mouth, not in your hand".

Continuity[]

  • In the "I Mow" song sequence, Kiff mows a pattern in the shape of her face from the self-portrait she painted in "Big Barry on Campus".
  • Table Town's Cringiest Wannabes is alluded to; when Kiff notices Roy filming her stumbling in Beryl's heels, Kiff asks him if he is working on a similarly-titled show called Table Town's Coolest Landscapers, to which Roy replies that he is actually filming Table Town's Wobbliest Youngsters.
  • Kiff is seen wearing the sweater Barry gave her in "The Fourth Bath".
