"You Can't Handle the Tooth!" is the first segment of the twenty-second episode of the first season of Kiff. It is the forty-third segment overall.
Synopsis[]
Kiff has a lot to do today, but brushing her tooth is not on the list.
Plot[]
One morning, just as Kiff is about to leave the house, Beryl asks her if she has brushed her front tooth. Kiff replies that she has a lot of "things" to do with Barry, who then arrives at the house. She offers to brush twice the next day instead, but Beryl insists that she brush now. Kiff gripes to Barry that Beryl is being stubborn, so he suggests that Kiff perform a song explaining her predicament. Kiff performs a terrible-sounding song in which she explains that she is too busy with "things" to brush. Beryl simply says that Kiff can do those "things" after brushing.
Upstairs in the bathroom, Kiff, instead of brushing her tooth, brainstorms more ways to avoid doing so. She brushes Barry's fur, then tells Beryl she has brushed without specifying what she brushed. Beryl sees through the ruse and sends Kiff back upstairs to brush her tooth, under "doctor's orders". Trying to exploit this statement, Kiff calls Dr. Lyon and asks him to tell Beryl to allow her not to brush, but is unable to tell him why she cannot brush. Lyon says that he cannot recommend that a patient skip brushing, but also relates an anecdote about how the apple came to be called "nature's toothbrush". Kiff sneaks into the kitchen for an apple and eats it, which makes her teeth appear shiny and clean. Still suspicious, Beryl has Martin inspect Kiff's toothbrush, and he finds it dry. Beryl sends Kiff back upstairs and tells her that she now also has to floss.
Next, Kiff has Barry mold her a fake tooth out of dried toothpaste, which she places over her real front tooth. Despite its large size, Beryl falls for it until it falls out of Kiff's mouth and breaks. Upstairs, Kiff wonders why she failed to come up with a good song earlier, then remembers the "shower principle": the phenomenon where creative inspiration hits when a person is zoned out while doing boring everyday activities. She deduces that she lacked inspiration because she skipped brushing her teeth that morning, and finds the inspiration to write a song by brushing Barry's teeth, rather than her own.
Kiff goes downstairs and performs her finished song, where she lists all the things she has to do that day. Beryl is seemingly swayed by the song and tells Kiff that she can instead brush her tooth at night – which is now, because Kiff spent the entire day putting off brushing her tooth. Upstairs, Kiff brushes her teeth, still convinced that the day was "a real win" for her.
